Construction Quality Management is a crucial component of the construction industry, especially in building construction projects. Effective quality management practices can significantly improve project outcomes, ensuring that the finished product meets the necessary standards while remaining within budget and time constraints.
This article discusses Construction Quality Management practices in building construction, based on the research by Ahmed Mohamed Hassan Abd El Fattah, who holds a DBA degree from “IBAS” International Business school of Switzerland. His investigation research in 2024 provides valuable insights into the factors that influence quality management and their application in building construction.
In this article, we will explore the key Construction Quality Management practices at building construction sites and analyze the findings from Ahmed Mohamed Hassan Abd El Fattah’s research (2024), highlighting how these practices are applied to improve construction quality.
Construction Quality Management is essential in the construction industry to ensure that projects meet the required standards, are completed on time, and are within budget. This article discusses the significance of quality management in building construction projects and examines the key findings
“The quality management practices of the company are assessed in chapter 4 of this thesis both by interview and questionnaires. The first emphasis is to differentiate the works that are public, private, and cooperative. According to the result, the majority of the company’s clients are private sector, and cooperatives come final. So, this indicates public sectors are more influenced by contractor’s quality management activities”. (AHMED, 2024)
Construction Quality Management ensures that construction projects adhere to the desired standards and requirements. Effective management systems focus on reducing errors, controlling costs, and delivering high-quality projects. These systems also emphasize the importance of maintaining Construction Quality Management across all phases of construction.
The company’s priorities are also assessed in this section. The most important and highly prioritized factor by the company are project cost budget. This shows the company focuses on how to be profitable, but only focusing on cost doesn’t bring profit because other factors like quality work and time are highly important for more profitability of contractors. (AHMED, 2024)
Employee awareness of quality standards and practices is crucial for the successful implementation of Construction Quality Management systems in building construction projects. Diverging views among employees about quality can lead to inconsistencies, making it difficult to align company goals with quality objectives. Fostering a shared understanding of quality among employees ensures smoother project execution and enhanced quality outcomes.
Construction Quality Management relies on employees’ comprehension and commitment to quality standards to achieve the desired project outcomes. By emphasizing the importance of Construction Quality Management and aligning employee perceptions, companies can streamline operations and improve the quality of the final product.
“The perception of employees in the company on quality is different. Many respondents perceived quality works gives competitive advantage for the company by creating another work to get in the future. The next perceptions of the respondents are elimination of defects by doing quality works they can increase profit. In general respondents have different perceptions about quality and there is no common understanding about quality this makes it the company direction on quality to manage difficult”. (AHMED, 2024)
Quality improvement programs such as ISO 9001, Total Quality Management (TQM), and quality control/quality assurance systems are essential in ensuring consistent quality across construction projects. These systems help standardize processes and provide guidelines for continuous improvement in Construction Quality Management, ultimately contributing to the success of building construction projects.
By integrating Construction Quality Management systems like ISO 9001, TQM, and quality control/quality assurance, construction companies can maintain high standards, ensuring that projects meet client expectations and are completed efficiently. Through these programs, companies can foster a culture of continuous improvement, enhancing both the quality and profitability of construction projects.
“The other analyzed issues were about the quality improvement program of the company. Types of quality improvement programs are also included in chapter 4 like ISO 9001, Total quality management, quality control/quality assurance. From these types of quality improvement, the respondents describe that the company has an intention to practice quality control /quality assurance quality management system type”. (AHMED, 2024)
Several factors impact the quality of construction projects, including design, materials, labor, and project management. By focusing on these critical areas, construction companies can improve Construction Quality Management and ensure better project outcomes. These factors are key in ensuring that the final product meets the required standards and client expectations.
These elements of Construction Quality Management emphasize the importance of proactive planning and resource allocation. By addressing these factors, construction companies can enhance overall project quality, reduce risks, and increase client satisfaction. Effective management of these factors is central to maintaining the integrity of construction projects and achieving sustainable results.
“The main factors affecting quality of building construction projects are analyzed in this chapter. The number of the main factors are 12 here is their list: project, design, contract, materials, labors, equipment, subcontractors, site layout, systems, site staff, financial, and owner. The above main factors have their own sub factors which are 48 in numbers. All the main factors and sub factors are ranked by the respondents which are helpful for the company in order to concentrate on the factors that highly influence the quality of the project especially during design quality management system for the company”. (AHMED, 2024)
Construction companies face various challenges when implementing quality management systems. These challenges include resistance to change, lack of resources, and insufficient training. Companies must overcome these challenges to successfully integrate Construction Quality Management into their operations. Effective implementation requires a comprehensive approach that addresses organizational and resource-based barriers.
Overcoming these obstacles is essential for ensuring that Construction Quality Management practices are fully integrated into the company’s culture and operations. By addressing these challenges, construction companies can create a foundation for continuous improvement and enhanced project outcomes.
“Most of the employees in the company don’t implement a quality management system. The contractors which implement QMS like: ISO 9001 and quality control/quality assurance have better quality understanding and practice than the contractors who doesn’t implement quality management system as it understood from the analysis of the other related study. And, the contractors that implement quality management systems have their own objectives about their quality management system. This helps them to achieve quality and other related issues like, for example success in finance and bidding”. (AHMED, 2024)
Design-related issues, such as incomplete or inconsistent designs, and material-related problems are among the most common factors affecting the quality of construction projects. Proper design and material selection are essential for the success of Construction Quality Management in any construction project. Ensuring high-quality designs and using reliable materials can significantly enhance the outcome of construction projects.
These aspects highlight the importance of Construction Quality Management in minimizing design flaws and material issues, ensuring the long-term success and durability of construction projects.
“Building construction projects in Egypt are suffering quality problems and this study identified that, design related issues are the most common among the twelve different factors examined in this study and very important for the success of quality practices. Design related issues like completeness and consistency of design documents are very important for success of quality”. (AHMED, 2024)
In conclusion, quality management plays a vital role in ensuring the successful completion of building construction projects. By focusing on the main factors affecting quality, addressing challenges, and implementing effective quality management programs, companies can significantly improve their Construction Quality Management practices and project outcomes. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan Abd El Fattah’s research offers valuable insights into improving construction quality standards and practices.
